Migraines / Cluster Headaches / Tension Headaches

Migraines/ Cluster Headaches/ Tension Headaches

Migraines are characterized by a throbbing or pulsing sensation and can last for a few hours to a few days. Migraines are often preceded by an “aura” and include symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to sounds and lighting.

When a migraine attack happens the hormone serotonin level will drop. This is usually seen a few days before a migraine through changes in bowel habits or increased neck stiffness.

The cause of migraines is not known but can stem from genetics and environmental changes.

3 phases of Migraines

These phases each have symptoms associated but symptoms and durations may vary

Prodome (Pre attack)

The preceding phase is usually distinguished by increased thirst, increased urination, mood changes, food cravings, and neck stiffness. This phase can also be accompanied by aura which is usually visual disturbances or nervous system symptoms like tingling or loss of sensation. Not all migraine sufferers experience aura

Attack (During attack)

  • Nausea
  • Light sensitivity
  • Throbbing pulsing pain on either one side or both sides of the head
  • Vision disturbances
  • Light headedness

Postdrome (Post attack)

The affect effect of a migraine can vary considerably but is usually associated with confusion, mood changes, weakness, and sensitivity to light.
